Election?

J'can media seem to be hintin' that election might happen early this year -- possibly before Cricket. Hmm, could it be, could it be, could it be so? Commissioner said it's likely to be quite violent -- don't doubt him -- police he oversees statin' figures of about 40 murders so far. Bruce (opposition) seems kinda silent right now, Portia's side (gov't) currently somewhat loud, so there might be some substance to de speculation, but could it be, could it be, could it be so?

They won't do it before the Cricket World Cup. They won't want the headlines to scare away the tourists, and Jamaica has invested too much to lose out because of some thugs.

I think Leon is right. The chances of adverse effects are too high for them to chance it. What will probably happen is that there will be an excessive clamp down on crime until after the cricket.

No chance of election before worldcup, they have too much riding on it.

As for the murder rate, it's totally unbelievable, almost 3 a day!

elections after world cup. will happen in barbados too. probably within 3 months of world cup. why?cause people will still be feeling nice if world cup comes off good and its early enough that the region wont be feeling the negative effects off at the stupid waste of money they putting into this one event.

in a years time though we will be struggling.

Based on you guys' comments, it really doesn't seem likely that there'll actually be an early election. That might be for de best, if Cricket can really reduce de crime rate before ballot time.

i have to echo the sentiment about a post World Cup election. If we ever expect to host anything again of this magnitude or greater, all MUST go well. There is too much at stake as a country and as a region whenever we get a large financial opportunity like this one. Let's not blow it on age old quarrels.

Amen, Kami.
Nice to meet yu, Aurie. U're right, as a region, sky's the limit if we leverage every opp'ty like this.

Hope the election will go over as peacefully as possible. One has to wonder whether there was a political undercurrent to the Commissioner's comments.
